Sorry Rachael

Well, today we made Sliced Steaks with Sauerbraten Gravy, Onion Hash Browns and Spiced Red Cabbage out of Rachael Ray's "Big Orange Book".

You will need the following:

6 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for the steak, divided
2 tbsp butter
4 cups frozen shredded hash browns (I used 4 potatoes and shredded them myself)
2 onions, 1 quartered and thinly sliced, 1 chopped
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1 small or 1/2 large head red cabbage, shredded (I used Napa Cabbage)
2 tsp caraway seeds
2 tsp paprika
1 fresh bay leaf
1 (2 to 2 1/2-pound) piece London broil (bottom round) steak
2 tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp red wine vinegar
1 cup beef stock
1/4 cup cream
1 cup apple cider or juice (I used apple juice)
1/4 cup grainy mustard

This was a definite miss. Even with shredding my own potatoes, it still took longer than 30 minutes and it tasted horrible. While I did substitute Napa Cabbage for the Red, the spices just didn't seem to work for us. We realized that we do not like Caraway Seeds.

After every recipe I make, I mark the book with either a happy face or a sad face. We were definitely not happy after this one.
