Finally Posting

I think it's about time to update the blog.  K2 and I have been going estate sale shopping the past three weeks, and I've been taking pictures, but I've been lazy about taking the time to post.  So here goes:



 

Week 1-I didn't pay over $10 for everything in the picture. 

 



Week 2: This was another less than $10 week.  I picked up this percolator for a dollar.  The last one I bought doesn't work that well; J has yet to try this one though (I don't drink coffee).

The next pictures are from this weekend.  We went out on both Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday's bargains came from a house that was filled with things.  K2 did not go with me, so I headed out with J.  I picked up the cookie jar for K2; the Corningware is for me.  Inside the cookie jar are cookie cutters.

K2 went to a sale without me on Friday and she picked up 3 of the 4 Pyrex bowls.  When J and I went out Saturday morning, I picked up the other one (these were all from the same sale):

And finally, the sale that had the Pyrex went to 75% off today, so we took another trip there this morning.  Everything in the picture was $21.  The percolator is K2's, along with the thermos'. 

 I have been cooking quite a bit and made an Ellie Krieger recipe, however, it left a lot to be desired, so will obviously not be something I waste time making again. 



 

And finally, here's a picture of Buddy and baby A.  Buddy is not thrilled with him, but is tolerating the situation because he was on the couch, where he's not allowed.

 

No shopping this weekend



 

Because I was in Minot, North Dakota last week for work, K2 and I didn't get a chance to hit any estate sales yesterday.  She wanted to go this morning, but they typically only run through Saturday so there weren't any still going on.

 

We did make it out last Saturday.  We've seen this guy two weekends in a row now (love his goggles):

 



We hit around 5 sales and took J with us.  He'll probably stay home from now on.  The majority of the houses belonged to elderly woman and didn't have any tool items that interested him.

I picked up these items to add to my "collection".  I paid $6 total:

Last Sunday, we used the smoker and made a brisket using the dry rub recipe from "Dadgum, That's Good, Too!".  It left us unimpressed.

We also tried the "Smoked Pimento Cheese" appetizer recipe from the same book.  Again, unimpressed. 

This morning for breakfast, I made the "Breakfast Bread Pudding" recipe from "The Pioneer Woman Cooks-Food From My Frontier".  I wasn't sure how it would turn out, because I haven't had the best of luck with her recipes, but this worked.

 

Today will be spent recuperating from the Minot trip.  When we left North Dakota yesterday morning, it was 38 degrees.  During our last leg, the pilot told us it was 86 in Louisiana.  Quite a temperature difference.  All I can say is I'm glad J was never stationed there.  It's a very small town, very rural and the winters would be much harsher that I would want to deal with.  J's comment was that it shouldn't be too much of a culture change because I'm from "rural" and "winter", but this place definitely beats small town MI.

Estate Sale Shopping

 

Yesterday K2 and I had a list of 5 Estate Sales to check out.  We headed out bright and early.  At the first sale we picked up a few things, K2 bought bows and a barometer and I bought the Rival Crock-ette (never used) for $3.00.  The ladies running the sale were enamored with Baby A and followed us into several of the rooms trying to get him to smile.  They would have gladly held him if K2 would have handed him over-which wasn't going to happen.  

 

The next sale we headed to had a line out the door waiting to get in.  Neither or us bought anything there.  They had a cupboard full of Waterford crystal glasses for $80 a glass-definitely outrageous prices.  I'll stick to my $30 for 6 Waterford glasses that I bought in Germany. 

 

 The next sale was the first one we had been to where I felt sad about the people who had died.  They were selling photo albums (par for the course at Estate Sales) but these were still full of the family's pictures.  Hopefully there just wasn't any family left and not that the remaining family didn't care.  K2 ended up buying 2 of the photo albums and some records.  She will just take out the pictures it contains and replace with her own.  Her new plan is to look for fabric at the sales to use to cover the albums.  Several houses we've been to have sold fabric, but now that it's on our list, we'll probably never come across it.  I also bought the "vintage" General Electric Automatic Food Cooker for $6.00.  I thought it looked interesting and after a quick cleaning, it should look brand new.  I'm sure once I lose interest I'll end up donating it to Goodwill.

 

At our 4th sale, the crowds were horrible, but everything was half off so we had to look around.  K2 didn't buy anything, but picked up 2 casserole dishes and 3 small "vintage" Corningware pans. 

 

Once J moves here for good next Saturday, the plan is for him to get glass shelves cut for a hutch I have in the garage.  It will be moved into what was previously the storage room.  I'll use the hutch for the "vintage" dishes I've been picking up lately. 

 

We didn't make it to the 5th sale as it ended at noon and by this time it was past 1 pm.

 

 

 

Friday and Saturday Sales

Friday I was off from work.  J came to LA on Thursday night, so bright and early Friday morning, J, K2 and I headed out to hit an estate sale and a few garage sales.  I bought this cake pan at the estate sale.  It was $20 and probably a lot more than I should have paid, but it was the first time I had seen one at any sale, so I decided to pick it up.

K2 spent a grand total of $4.00 for the things she purchased at one of the garage sales.  I figured the "vintage" orange Tupperware containers would match her kitchen pretty good.  And that was about all we found.  J and I went to another estate sale after dropping K2 off (she had to work) in Tyler, Texas, which is about an hour drive.  We bought nothing at the sale, but as we were passing a gravel truck, a rock flew up and cracked my windshield so we had to stop and get that fixed.  So, that trip ended up being a little costly.

We were up bright and early on Saturday morning.  We decided to try another new area.  K2 paid $8.25 for everything in the picture.  (If you click on the picture, it will open in another window and will be bigger).  You'll see what we did with the lamp further down.

And these last few pictures are of the baby's room.  It is pretty much done now.  These cubbies have towels and wash clothes (I can't remember what is in the cabinet).

K2 bought the glider on Craigslist for $50 (she got a good deal).  These cubbies are holding blankets, bibs, burp clothes and a few miscellaneous items.

In this picture, you can see the lamp from above.  We changed the shade to the one she got from her crib bedding and it looks pretty good (the lamp was $1.00).  These cubbies hold nothing but clothes in various sizes.

And finally the changing table.  She needs to put the clothes away on the top shelf, but that's about all she has left to do.

I should have taken a picture of the bag of stuff K2 got when she went to a Bundles for Babies class that the military does for expectant parents.  I guess Gerber donates new baby items to the military and they pass these things out when new parents attend a class that teaches them about finances and how to deal with having a new baby around.  The bag had packages of sleepers, bibs, burp clothes, wash clothes, onesies, mittens, crib sheets and a receiving blanket.  It was definitely worth having to sit through the class.  K2 also won a prize for answering a question correctly and she chose a toy that attaches to the car seat.  You can see it above next to the lamp.

J and I head off to Anaheim on Tuesday.  We are planning on going to Disneyland next Saturday and will just wing it from Tuesday - Friday.  I'm sure I'll have pictures to post.
